What to expect when getting a custom mouthguard.
Impressions taken
We take detailed impressions of your teeth and current orthodontic appliance. This gives us the exact shape of your mouth at this point in your treatment — including all bracket positions and wire placements.
Custom fabrication
The mouthguard is fabricated over a model of your mouth to ensure it fits accurately around your braces. The material is thick enough to absorb impact but slim enough to remain comfortable during play.
Fit check and handover
We check the fit at our Claremont clinic before you take it away. Any minor adjustments are made on the spot. We'll also advise on how to clean and store it, and when it may need to be updated as your teeth continue to move.

Can I wear a mouthguard with braces?
Yes — and you should. A standard off-the-shelf mouthguard won't fit properly over brackets, which is why custom mouthguards are designed specifically for patients in braces. At our Claremont practice, we can provide a custom appliance that fits over your braces and still offers proper protection.
What sports need a mouthguard?
Any sport where there is a risk of contact to the face or head. In Perth, the most common sports we see patients playing include AFL, rugby union, rugby league, basketball, hockey, and martial arts. Even sports like water polo and netball carry enough collision risk to warrant protection, particularly for patients with braces.
How is a custom mouthguard different from a chemist one?
Over-the-counter boil-and-bite mouthguards cannot be shaped properly around orthodontic brackets and wires. They sit loosely, offer less impact absorption, and can actually damage brackets on impact. A custom mouthguard is made from impressions of your actual teeth and appliance, so it fits precisely and provides consistent protection.
Will a mouthguard interfere with my orthodontic treatment?
No. Custom sports mouthguards for orthodontic patients are designed to accommodate tooth movement throughout treatment. They do not exert forces on the teeth and do not affect how your braces or aligners work. How long does a custom mouthguard last?
For patients in active orthodontic treatment, a mouthguard may need to be updated every 12 months or so as your teeth shift during treatment. Once treatment is complete and your teeth have settled into their final positions, a well-maintained mouthguard can last several years. We recommend bringing it to check-up appointments so the team can assess the fit.
